Meet Ben Montgomery, award winning journalist, Pulitzer Prize finalist, and author of the New York Times bestseller Grandma Gatewood’s Walk. Montgomery, a staff writer at the Tampa Bay Times will discuss his latest book, The Leper Spy: The Story of an Unlikely Hero of World War II. Copies will be available for sale and signing. The Leper Spy chronicles a tiny, young Filipina woman, Josefina Guerrero. As a top spy for the Allies during World War II, she stashed explosives, tracked Japanese troop movements, and smuggled maps of fortifications across enemy lines. Guerrero suffered from leprosy, which horrified the Japanese, so they refused to search her. After the war, army chaplains found her in a leper colony and campaigned for the US government to welcome a foreigner with leprosy. Montgomery is the founder of the narrative journalism website Gangrey.com and a 2010 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in local reporting. He won the Dart Award and Casey Medal for the series For Their Own Good, about abuse at Florida's oldest reform school. He lives in Tampa. [less-]

The soulful Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes are heading back to Clearwater! For Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, ‘comfortable’ has never been a word associated with their brand of raucous, roots-tinged rock and bluesy reverie. The Jukes have more than 30 albums on their resume, thousands of acclaimed live performances across the globe and a vibrant legacy of classic songs that have become “hits” to their large and famously-dedicated fan base. “With the Jukes, you’re out there every night leading this great rock n’ roll circus, giving it everything you’ve got,” says Southside Johnny Lyon. The iconic Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes released the much anticipatedSOULTIME!, their first new studio CD of all original material in five years, on Leroy Records in September 2015. SOULTIME! celebrates the transformative power of ‘70s soul music and represents a return to - as Southside sings - “just letting the music take us away.” This release encapsulates everything that fans cherish about Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes including patterns of horns and rhythm plus each song painted with catchy choruses, top-notch string arrangements and gospel-charged vocals.   [less-]

The Moscow Festival Ballet returns to Ruth Eckerd Hall to perform Sleeping Beauty on Thursday, March 2 at 7 pm. Often considered the finest achievement of the classical ballet, Sleeping Beauty takes inspiration from a well-known fairy tale. An evil fairy condemns a baby princess to prick her finger and die on her sixteenth birthday. But the Lilac Fairy saves the child by declaring the injury will merely put the princess to sleep until awakened by a prince’s kiss. This piece is filled with a king and a queen, good and bad fairies, a beautiful princess and a dreamy prince, magical stage effects, courtly splendor and a storybook kingdom from the realm of the imagination. The Moscow Festival Ballet was founded in 1989 when legendary principal dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet Sergei Radchenko sought to realize his vision of a company, which would bring together the highest classical elements of the great Bolshoi and Kirov Ballet companies in an independent new company within the framework of Russian classic ballet. Leading dancers from across Russia have forged under Radchenko’s direction and this exciting company will be staging a new production of the timeless classic Sleeping Beauty. [less-]

[less-]

What is power2give.org?

It’s Tampa Bay’s new funding platform for local arts organizations! The concept is simple: Nonprofit organizations list needs for a specific project – for example, costumes for an upcoming show or instruments for undeserved children. Visitors to the site choose the project that matches their interests or touches their hearts and make a donation. The donation may be as little as $5 but that very important contribution supports local arts and enables creativity to flourish.
With tools and resources for both donors and cultural organizations, power2give.org makes posting, donating and promoting projects convenient and engaging. On power2give, all gifts are processed even if the project only receives partial funding. Unlike some crowd funding sites, you keep the money you raise whether you hit your target or not. Projects are listed on the site for a maximum of 90 days, or until they meet their financial goals.

Who can post projects?

You may post a project if:

  • You represent a 501(c)3 nonprofit arts and cultural organization located in Hillsborough or Pinellas Counties that has been registered as a charitable organization with the State of Florida for at least one year at the time of posting
  • You are authorized to post projects on behalf of the 501(c)3 that you represent
  • You hold a valid solicitation agreement in the State of Florida (If you are a professional solicitor, you are registered with the State of Florida and have a valid solicitation agreement with the 501(c)3 that you represent.)
  • You can provide a copy of the organization’s 2012 990 IRS Form

Project Requirements

  • Project funding will be used only for the intended purpose you state on the site
  • Projects posted to the site will only be related to arts and culture organizations
  • Project request amounts will not exceed $10,000.
